Lettering with Liz
10:30 AMWhen Liz Roessler invited me to take her beginners calligraphy class at her Leather Disctrict studio I was excited and intrigued. Calligraphy is something I had never explored before and I doubted I would be any good at it. Regardless, I was delighted to head down to her studio and learn the basics of calligraphy.
Liz's cozy studio is decorated with samples of her work as well as a few desks and work spaces. She had each of our work spaces set up with all of our materials for class as well as a few snacks to munch on during class. After spending a few minutes chatting about her background over Starbucks peppermint hot chocolates, Liz dove into the basics of calligraphy. Before you knew it (and much to my surprise) I was mastering broad strokes and some beautiful figure eights!
The two hour class flew by quickly; we spent the first hour learning how to hold the calligraphy pens, write with the sharp nibs, and mastering different strokes before jumping into letters, our initials, and other fun details for the last hour.
Liz doesn't cut any corners; her classes use acrylic inks and the same calligraphy pens and nibs she uses to produce beautiful envelopes, place cards, invitations, menus, and more. Be sure to wear old clothes to class, acrylic inks are beautiful, highly pigmented, and permanent!
I left Liz's beginner class feeling like a true calligraphy artist and ready to tackle a new project. The best thing about Liz's class is that in addition to arming you with the skills you need to master the art of calligraphy she also gives you the physical supplies you need as well. Myself and fellow classmate Zora, both went home with a jar of calligraphy ink, a calligraphy pen, two nibs, scraps of paper, and the lined calligraphy guides you see above (as well as a PDF). Everything we needed to head home and address some last minute holiday cards!

I was invited by Liz for a complimentary class for review purposes; all opinions expressed are my own.
